문학을 학습하고 연구하는 데에 있어서 비평의 역할이 무엇인지 살펴보는데에 초점을 맞춘다. 흔히 문학 비평은 문학 작품을 이해하는 데에 부가되는 선택적 행위로 간주하기 쉽다. 그러나 학생들은 본 강좌를 통해서 비평은 작품을 이해하는 방식을 논하는 것이라기보다는 작품자체를 가능하게 하는 인간의 사유행위와 직접 관계되어있음을 살펴보게 될 것이다. 이를 통해 학생들은 비평행위가 문학을 이해하고 인간의 행위와 사유를 이해하는 인문학 고유의 영역에 훨씬 가깝게 접근해 있음을 살펴보게 될 것이다.
