This course is designed to offer English education majors a comprehensive understanding of British and American poetry. We are going to read major (and other famous) primary texts from different periods beginning from sixteenth-century British Renaissance period and nineteenth-century American Transcendental period to early twentieth-century. Through this course, you are expected to gain a wide ken necessary for understanding and enjoying poetry in the English language in general by close reading and critical analysis of a wide variety of British and American poetry. At the same time, not only literary historical background but also cultural and political contexts will be examined and applied to understand poetry from different time and locations. Moreover, through this course you can also prepare your Teacher’s certification exam. We will mainly deal with poems included in Perrine’s Sound and Sense of its latest edition (14th).
