Laura Seabright is a science teacher at an inner-city school. With her top set class, she investigates HIV transmission using a practical demonstration involving milk powder and starch solution that mimics the transfer of bodily fluids. It's a tricky subject but with guidance from their teacher, the pupils handle the topic with remarkable maturity. Then after putting aside some common misconceptions about HIV and AIDS, Laura sets up a group activity where the students discuss whether funds should be spent on HIV treatment or prevention. Ralph Levinson for the Institute of Education is on-hand to offer some help dealing with these difficult issues in the classroom.
