This course aims to investigate the roles and functions of literature within the context of an environmental crisis. The students will learn 1) the concept of ecocriticism; 2) the various literary traditions of literature and environment, pastoral, dwelling, wilderness (sublime), nature as sacred; 3) eco-feminism and ecology in post-colonialism. On top of that, they willhave chances to explore briefly some of East-Asian literary traditions (Korean, China, Japan), which will be compared to the Western perspectives.
