What exactly are schools and teachers allowed to do to control student behaviour? Behaviour czar and headteacher Sir Alan Steer explains the current rules on discipline to Mike Baker. Sir Alan argues that schools don't understand the extra powers to control behaviour that have been handed to staff in recent years. Following his recent review of progress made on raising standards of behaviour in schools, he feels teachers need to have more confidence about using the powers already available to them. From the legal power to discipline pupils for breaking rules, to confiscation, detention and exclusions, there are firm grounds for using each of these in school which this programme explains. It also outlines the powers heads have been given the power to search pupils' possessions and screen for weapons, and explores how all school staff have the power to discipline pupils off-site, if agreed by the school community and included in the Behaviour Policy.
