본 강좌의 목적은 한국에 왔던 서양인들, 그리고 서양에 갔던 한국인들을 통해 한국과 세계의 교류에 대하여 파악하는 데 있다. 즉, 일국사적인 맥락에서 벗어나 세계사 속의 한국을 바라보면서 상호교류의 역사를 이해한다. 구체적으로 당시 한국에 왔던 서양인들에 대해서는, 한국에 온 목적에 따라 고빙관 및 외교관, 언론인, 여행자, 선교사 등으로 나누어서 살펴보면서, 각 서양인들이 한국사의 전개에 어떻게 참여했고, 한국인들과 어떻게 교류했고, 어떠한 영향을 주고받았는지 알아본다. 반면, 개항기 서양에 갔던 한국인들에 대해서는, 당시 한국인들이 서양과 세계를 어떻게 인식했는지, 그리고 세계 속의 한국을 어떻게 자리매김했고, 서양의 문물을 수용하는 문제에 대해서는 각기 어떻게 생각하고 있었는지와 같은 문제들을 살펴본다.The purpose of this course is to understand the history of Korea's interaction with the world through the eyes of Westerners who came to Korea and Koreans who went to the West.
