영국국민의 형성과 관련된 선사시대를 살펴보고 앵글로색슨 시대로부터 20세기에 이르기까지의 영국문학의 주된 흐름을 개관하면서 각 시대의 중요한 작가와 작품을 중점적으로 검토하고 영국문학의 연구와 영국인의 이해의 토대를 마련한다. 영문 텍스트를 면밀히 읽되 각 시대의 정치, 사회, 문화의 관련성 속에서 문학의 이해가 이루어지도록 한다.
