1. 영국과 현재 영어의 일반적 사실 그리고 영어에 미친 영국의 주요한 정치 사회 문화적 역사, 즉 영어의 외면사(external history)를 이해한다.
2. 인도유럽어(Indo-European languages)부터 현대영어 (Modern English) 시기에 이르기까지 성장 발전해온 영어의 내면적 발달양상, 즉 내면사(internal history)를 통시적(diachronic)으로 개관하여 이해한다.
