This course is intended to provide students with a solid background to understand historical developments of financial institutions and financial markets. Lectures cover origins, events, driving forces and theoretical underpinnings for these developments in the areas such as money and banking structure, evolution of stock markets, insurance, financial innovation and regulations. Classroom discussions would focus on the contemporary issues in modern finance as well, such as the recurring financial crises and regulatory reform.
