This course is designed to explore several issues of Modern Western History that covers from the late 15th century to the years around 1900. During the period, Western world began to expand to the rest parts on the globe. By mainly focusing on the crucial themes in both European and American continent, this course expects to allow students to gain basic knowledge on the features of modern Western world and their impacts on other regions of the world. In other words, this course tries to not only grasp the aspects of European expansion and phenomena of global westernization from a critical point of view but also examine how the efforts of self-renewal in the western societies spread out. Furthermore, this course stimulates students to think over what kind of meaningful implications the modernity in the West has offered to contemporary Korean society as well.
In reading lists, students will find at least one or two topics that intrigue their attention such as nation-building process and the rise of nationalism. Keep an important point in mind; As a upper-division(for juniors and seniors) lecture course taught in English, this course is designed for History or Social Science major students.
