This course traces the history of the English language from its prehistoric but reconstructable roots in Indo-European through its earliest written records into the present and its spread across the globe.

1. 비디오 The basics and Indo-European In this class, we discussed the basic concepts in Historical Linguistics, covering the comparative method and the reconstruction process. Then we tried our hand at recognizing language relationships and language family grouping. In the latter part of the class, we discussed the Indo-European family and the linguistic changes that caused the Germanic language to split off as a branch in that family. Finally we critique scholarly periodization of English. URL
2. 비디오 Old English (1) In this class, we started the history of Old English, examining the writing system, the sound system, and the morphological system of Old English. URL
3. 비디오 Old English (2) We continued discussing Old English morphology, focusing on adjectives, pronouns, and verbs. Then we studied Old English Syntax and semantics. At the end of class, we practiced reading and translating Old English. URL
4. 비디오 Middle English (1) In this class, we moved onto Middle English, examining the orthographical system and sound system of Middle English. We focused our attention on changes and sound changes. We tried our hand at deriving the Middle English forms from Old English words. URL
5. 비디오 Middle English (2) We continued discussing Middle English morphology, syntax, semantics and dialectal patterns. URL
6. 비디오 Early Modern English We discussed Early Modern English. We paid attention to such issues as borrowing, orthographic changes, and sound changes. URL
7. 비디오 The Spread of English and World Englishes We discussed the spread of English across the globe, since the time of American Independence, and we extended our discussion to World Englishes. URL
8. 비디오 World Englishes, Pedagogy, and Korean English We discussed pedagogical aspects involving World Englishes, and we focused on Korean English and its characteristics and perception. URL
9. 비디오 Sociolinguistics and History of English In this lecture, we discussed Sociolinguistics and History of English, focusing on politeness and the use of the pronouns you/thou. URL
10. 비디오 Pragmatics: Discourse Markers In this lecture, we focused on discourse markers, and the development of some discourse markers in English. URL
11. 비디오 Development of Genre In this lecture, we discussed the concept of Genre and the development of some genres, such as news discourse, in the history of English. URL
12. 비디오 Grammaticalization In this lecture, we discussed the issue of Grammaticalization and its process---how grammatical items arise in the history of English. URL
13. 비디오 Formalist Explanation of Diachronic Changes Continuing from the previous class, we compared functionalist and formalist accounts on grammaticalization. URL
