Reinforced concrete structure is nowadays the most popular construction system for buildings with low to medium height over the world.
Accordingly, it is required for not only structural and construction engineers but also architects to possess the sound understanding and knowledge of the structural system to construct buildings with quality and safety measures. In this notion, the present course will offer a fundamental knowledge in design and analysis of reinforced concrete structures with a strong emphasis on the "First Principle". For this, the present course will deal with the various interesting topics from the "Small Picture" such as material properties, load path and load resistance mechanisms (flexure and shear) in individual structural members such as beams, columns, slabs and footings, etc., to the "Big Picture" such as the continuous system and overall requirements for structural design. The ACI 318 code provisions as well as Korea Building Codes will be used as the benchmark criteria through the course work. The students will be encouraged to gain a knowledge of "Know-Why" rather than "Know-How", and to be thinkers and decision- making engineers with their own opinions and ideas rather than simple code- followers and computer software operators. Upon the completion of the present course work, the students are expected to be able to explain and suggest a solution for a given engineering problem regarding design of reinforced concrete structures.
