This course helps you understand how the time-varying charges and currents generate electromagnetic fields. The interaction of those fields enables the radio waves propagates through the air and media. By way of Faraday’s law and Ampere’s law, wave equations are derived and solutions on simple problems are considered. Through the solution of wave equations, behaviors of radio waves in the air and in circuit boards are predicted and are considered in the design of high speed circuit board.
Lectures rely mainly on qualitative description of electromagnetic phenomena such as reflections, radiated emissions, and crosstalk. Quantitative explanations are also offered through wave equations such as Helmholtz equation, which helps to predict electric and magnetic field as well as voltages and currents.
After taking this course, students will obtain solid knowledge of working principles of radio frequency circuits and transmission lines and mathematical skills needed to analyze electromagnetic phenomena
