This course offers epoch-making lecture, which can be the pride of liberal arts at Sookmyung, to make students acquire a solid understanding of Korean tradition and culture. It makes a feature of every two weeks of special lectures by celebrities who have a profound knowledge of each major genre of Korean culture. Also, students are nurtured to be active in the class, based on the problem-based learning(PBL) educational method, and they are required to discuss the meaning of Korean culture, its consciousness between Korean people, and direction for its sustainable expansion in this globalization. Students are expected to take the initiatives to bring up relevant issues, and solve them on their own accord. As a result, they are able to obtain in-depth cultural capabilities and effective communication skills in English to become a future culture leader who can be the medium of our tradition and modern society.

차시별 강의

1.	한국어는 어떤 언어인가 : 이익섭(서울대학교 명예교수)	1. 한국어의 사용자수 기준에 의한 순위와 현재의 보급 상황을 제시한다. 2. 한국어가 계통적으로 알타이어족에 속한다는 것을 설명한다. 3. 한국어가 어순을 기준으로 SOV언어에 속한다는 것을 설명한다. 4. 한국어가 첨가어로서 가지고 있는 특성을 어미/조사의 용법을 중심으로 설명한다. 5. 한국어의 큰 특징 중의 하나인 의성의태어의 다양성을 설명한다. 6. 한국어의 가장 큰 특징을 이루는 경어법의 특성을 여러 용례를 가지고 그 종류와 조건들을 설명한다. 7. 한글의 문자적 특성과 우수성을 제자원리와 모아쓰기 방식을 중심으로 해설하고, 아울러 현용 맞춤법의 원리를 설명한다.
2.	Culture &Tourism: How Does Korea Appeal to Visitors? : Maureen OCrowley(서울관광마케팅)	A look at Korean Culture, both traditional and modern and how it can be used to attract visitors to Korea and to fully enjoy their journey once here.
3.	Soft power 시대의 한국의 문화외교 : 조대식(외교통상부 문화외교국장)	Soft power 시대의 한국의 문화외교(Soft Power and Cultural Diplomacy) 1. Soft Power란 무엇인가? 2. Soft Power를 구성하는 요소는 어떤 것이 있나? 3. 왜 Soft Power가 중요한가? 4. 문화외교란 무엇인가? 5. 왜 문화외교가 새로운 패러다임으로서의 외교인가?
4.	장소 브랜딩을 위한 전략과 한국 국가 및 도시 브랜드 운영의 영향 : 장동련(홍익대학교 교수)	Professor Chang will discuss many emerging strategies related to emerging place brand initiatives by governments and cities using many different case studies and also show some of the key projects he has conducted in his role as executive advisor for the Interbrand group.
5.	한국의 산수화 : 이성미(한국학 중앙연구원 명예교수)	이 강의에서는 먼저 동양 산수화의 철학적 기반이 무엇인가를 살펴보고, 한국의 민족 정서를 가장 잘 표현했다고 여겨지는 17-19세기 동안에 발달된 진경산수화를 소개한다. 당시의 역사적, 지성사적 상황을 소개함으로써 진경산수화라는 전통을 역사적 맥락에서 이해할 수 있도록 한다. 강의는 파워포인트로 진행된다.
6.	Seeing Korean Traditional Music Through a Cup : 김동원(원광디지털대학교 전통공연예술학과 교수)	Korean tradition music has its own beauty and distinctive outlook of the world which is distinguished from original concept of music. These characteristics make overseas aesthetes difficult to understand the Korean tradition music; on the other hand, they serve as more charming attractions. This lecture focuses on understanding the distinctive feature and beauty of Korean traditional music with temporal and spatial area of the "cup". By comparing Korean traditional music to the shape of the cup, which represents the established world, and the emptiness of the cup, it will be easier to understand the key concepts of Korean traditional music such as tune and nongeum, beat and rhythms and so on. The participants will understand not only the Korean traditional music but also the basic characteristics of the overall culture and art. After all, it will help the participants to introduce those concepts to foreigners.
7.	한국문화를 이해하는 창: 한국전통음악 : 김희선박사	A selected survey of classical, popular, and folk music of Korea. The goal is not only to expand our knowledge on musical repertoire but also to understand Korean culture, religion, society, and history through music. In addition, the role of music in Korea history as ritual, aesthetic experience, mode of communication, artistic and means of identity is explored. Thus this lecture is a flexible exploration of music in terms of its cultural, aesthetic, political and economic dimensions.
