This course is an 101 introductory course for those who are interested in understanding and experiencing the essential parts of Korean culture. It will deal with many facets of Koreaness such as K-architecture, K-film,

K-drama, K-pop, K-food, K-tourism, K-traditional music, K-paintings, K-dance and Korean cultural history. As you might know, Korea is a dynamic and creative nation with about five thousands years of cultural history. However,

little was known about it internationally until half a century ago. From the late 20th century, the miraculous development of the Korean economy and society, led by peoples educational passion, industrialization and

democratization, and followed by the so-called Korean Pop culture. "The Korean Wave" has put Korean culture on the frontline on the global news and media. This course will make you experience and understand the essence of Korean cultures. Ten specialists from each part of Korean culture will be invited to deliver their excellent lecture.

The Beauty of Korean Architecture	김성홍(Sung Hong KIM) Architecture and Urbanism of Contemporary Seoul 600년 역사 도시 서울은 왜 이렇게 생겼을까? 서양의 건축과 도시적 관점으로 보면 서울은 전통적이지도 근대적이지도 않는 혼성의 도시다. 지금의 서울을 만든 도시계획, 경제, 사회적 배경은 무엇이며, 한국 현대건축의 차별성과 잠재력은 어디에 있는가? 강의는 두 분으로 구성된다. 1부는 지난 60년간 서울의 주요한 도시계획과 그 결과로 만들어진 보편적 건축의 모습을 진단한다. 2부는 한국건축가들이 직면한 제약과 전선을 해부하고, 혁신을 위한 이들의 실험과 도전을 보여준다.

Another Republic of Korea	Emanuel Pastreich In this lecture Emanuel Pastreich talks about "another Republic of Korea" which Koreans tend to overlook, especially those aspects of traditional Korean culture that have been ignored in the push for modernity. Pastreich suggests that there is tremendous potential for Korea's future in traditional technologies like hanok architecture, oriental medicine, hanbok clothing, and above all Korean traditional philosophy.
