John Bayley continues his investigation into a group of underachieving girls at KS4 at Eltham Green School in south London. So far in his journey Bayley has encountered a number of teachers who find it hard to build relationships with the girls in question. Some accentuate discipline and control at the expense of building trust; others forget the behavior basics through fear of confrontation. But Hannah Johns has it all. Hannah joined the school three years ago as a Teach First recruit. Now she's Head of RE. Hannah feels it's crucial to vary her teaching style, mixing coolness and warmth as required, but using both as central weapons in her armoury, to motivate students and raise achievement. In one lesson she can issue a strict warning and have a chat about the same student's love life. According to Bayley, the cumulative effect of this nasty and nice routine is that she 'plays a blinder'.
