This course is designed to provide students with a general introduction to the English language.

차시별 강의

1.	Sounds	In this class, we discussed the speech production process, consonants, and vowel sounds. We also practiced phonetic transcription using the IPA symbols.
2.	Phonology	For this week, we examined the sound system of English. Concepts discussed include phoneme and allophone. We analyzed English allophones.
3.	Morphology	This class discussed phonological processes, and looked at some phonological changes in English, including elision, insertion, and weakening. We also got started on Morphology. The concept of morpheme was introduced.
4.	Morphology 2	This class continues with morphology. We examined the differences between morpheme and allophone. We also discuss morphological processes, such as blending, acronym, affixation, and the like.
5.	Syntax 1	In this class we studied word categories and how to identify parts of speech, using both morphological and distributional criteria.
6.	Syntax 2, Review	In this class, we started our discussion on phrases, and we did an extensive review for the midterm examination.
7.	Syntax 3	Here we discussed the syntax of simple sentences in English, and we practiced syntactic analysis of simple sentences.
8.	Syntax 4	This lecture introduces the structure of complex sentences in English, namely, embedded sentences and coordinated sentences.
9.	Syntax 5	This lecture discusses the issue of ambiguity, which refers to the possibility of a sentence to have two or more readings. Also, the topic of transformation, question, is covered.
10.	Pragmatics and Meaning (1)	This lecture moves on to the domain of meaning. Here we discussed Entailment, Presupposition, and Deixis.
11.	Pragmatics and Meaning (2), History of English (1)	In this lecture, Grice’s cooperative principle and conversational maxims are discussed. Also, we get started on Historical Linguistics, discussing such concepts as family tree, Indo-European, and comparative linguistics.
12.	History of English (2), Review	In this lecture, we finished the history of English, discussing such issues as the Great Vowel Shift, and noun cases. We also did a review for the final exam.
