In this complete lesson, Paul Preece at Camborne Science and Community College introduces his Year 11s to the concept of acids and alkalis and to the idea of pH. He then demonstrates the classic neutralisation process, but with a pH probe connected to a data logger to show on the whiteboard in real time exactly how the pH curve changes during the reaction. After the demonstration, the students analyse the pH curve and consider in more detail what it represents. This activity was one of several that contributed to a joint ASE/BECTA project exploring how the creative use of ICT in the classroom can support traditionally 'hard to teach' science topics.
