미분적분학은 수학의 기본적인 분야로 두 가지의 상호보완적인 개념으로 이루어져 있다. 그 중 하나인 미분은 직선의 기울기와 같은 변화율을 연구하는 것이다. 다른 하나인 적분은 곡선 아래의 면적, 체적등과 같은 양들의 집적을 연구하는 것이다. 미분과 적분이 서로 역 관계인 것은 미적분학의 기본정리에 의해서 보여져있다.
