This course aims to introduce the students to early British novels through the eighteenth century. The long Eighteenth Century is a period of unparalleled social, political, economic revolution which eventually brought about a re-interpretation of what it meant to be human beings. At the same time, literary writers attempted to represent that through various genres, poetry, satire, drama, and novel. Attention needs to be drawn to the phenomenon that a new literary genre, novel, was just emerging during that period. Thus the origins and development of the British novel will be examined through the eighteenth century.
