본 과목에서는 컴퓨터프로그램이 정확하게 동작하기 위한 컴퓨터의 실행방법에 대한 내부구조를 배우게 되고, 이와 연계하여 동일한 프로그램을 수행하면서도 프로세서의 처리성능을 어떠하게 높일 것인가에 대해 학습한다.

또한 컴퓨터의 성능평가기준과, 기본적인 기억, 연산, 제어장치의 구성을 이해하고, 최신 컴퓨터구조에 적용되는 첨단기법에 대한 이해와 장단점을 학습한다.
