Abstract:
Apply basic quantum mechanics to formulate and solve molecular many-body problems in chemistry. Students will have an opportunity to learn how to apply basic quantum mechanics to solve practical molecular problems using computer. Particular topics that we will cover, as time permits, are: (1) review of mathematical methods and basic quantum mechanics, (2) Hartree-Fock theory, (3) configuration interaction and coupled-cluster theory, (4) many-body perturbation and local correlation methods, (5) density functional theory, and (6) recent algorithmic progress to the linear-scaling electronic structure methods.
